Agentic workflow

Also known as: Multi-agent workflow, Agent orchestration

An agentic workflow is a business process in which one or more AI agents carry out defined steps — alone or in sequence with other agents and humans — with explicit handoffs, checkpoints and approvals built into the process design.

In one sentence

Agentic workflows explained: designing processes where AI agents and people share the work, with clear handoffs and approval points.

Example

In a localization workflow, one agent pre-translates, a second checks terminology against the termbase, and a human reviewer approves safety-relevant segments before publication.

Why it matters on your learning path

  • Technical writers: Map your content process first; agentic workflows automate well-defined steps, not unclear ones.
  • Technical project managers: Process design, RACI and audit trails matter more than the choice of agent framework.
  • Developers: Prefer simple, deterministic orchestration with agents at specific steps over fully autonomous loops.
