Generative engine optimization (GEO)

  • Technical marketers

In one sentence

Generative engine optimization (GEO) explained: making content visible and correctly cited in AI answers — where marketing meets documentation.

Example

A company adds concise definitions, specification tables and cited sources to its product pages; AI search summaries start quoting its values correctly.

Why it matters on your learning path

  • Technical writers: Documentation is often the most precise public content a company has — and a frequent source for AI answers.
  • Technical marketers: GEO extends SEO: measure brand mentions and citations in AI answers, not just rankings.

GEO vs. SEO

SEO optimizes for ranked links; GEO optimizes for being part of the generated answer. Good practice overlaps: clear structure, structured data, expertise and accurate facts. The term was coined in a 2023 research paper.
