Absolute maximum ratings
Also known as: Absolute maximum rating, Maximum ratings
German: Absolute Grenzwerte
In datasheets of electronic components, absolute maximum ratings are the limit values of voltage, current, temperature and similar quantities that must not be exceeded even briefly, because the device may be damaged; they are stress limits, not operating conditions, and functional operation is specified only within the recommended operating conditions.
- Motion control
- Technical documentation
In one sentence
Absolute maximum ratings are datasheet stress limits that must never be exceeded; the device is only specified within its recommended conditions.
Example
A driver IC lists 40 V as absolute maximum motor supply and 10–36 V as recommended operating range, so the board is designed for a 24 V supply with headroom for spikes.
How it applies
- Engineering: Designs keep a margin to the absolute maximum ratings, including transients such as supply spikes from a motor feeding energy back. Operating at the limit for long reduces lifetime even without immediate failure.
- Commissioning: Check that real voltages, including peaks during braking, stay inside the recommended range and well below the absolute maximum.
- Operation: Exceeding a rating can destroy the device at once or damage it in a way that shows up later.
- Documentation: Don't copy absolute maximum ratings into a product manual as operating data. Communicate the operating limits of the product (supply range, ambient temperature, current) as the values to stay within, and put component limits only in engineering documentation.
Absolute maximum ratings vs. recommended operating conditions
Absolute maximum ratings mark where damage may begin; the datasheet guarantees no function there. Recommended operating conditions are the range in which the device works as specified and all electrical characteristics apply. A product's operating limits are derived from the recommended conditions with margin, never from the absolute maximum.
