Area controller
Also known as: area supervisory controller
German: Bereichssteuerung
In industrial automation, an area controller is a control system that coordinates the lines, cells or units within one production area of a site, corresponding to the area level of the ISA-95 / IEC 62264 equipment hierarchy. It sits between the site-level systems and the line or cell controllers.
- System integration
In one sentence
An area controller coordinates the lines, cells or units of one production area, between site-level systems and line or cell controllers.
Example
In a bottling plant, the area controller of the packaging hall distributes orders to three packaging lines and reports their status to the MES.
How it applies
- Engineering: Define which decisions the area controller takes (order distribution, shared resources such as utilities or transport) and which it leaves to the Line controller or Cell controller. Overlapping responsibilities cause conflicting commands.
- Operation: Operators at area level see aggregated states. Fault messages must still point to the line or unit where the cause is, not only to the area.
- Documentation: Show the controller hierarchy in the system overview, using the plant's area, line and cell names consistently in drawings, HMI texts and manuals.
Area controller vs. line controller
The area controller coordinates several lines or units that share an area. A line controller coordinates the machines of one line. In smaller plants both roles may run on the same hardware; the documentation should still keep the functions apart.
