Energy performance indicator (ISO 50001)
Also known as: ISO 50001 EnPI
German: Energiekennzahl nach ISO 50001
In ISO 50001, the energy performance indicator is a required element of the energy management system: the organization must determine EnPIs that are appropriate for measuring and monitoring its energy performance, compare their values with the corresponding energy baseline and document the method for determining and updating them.

In one sentence
Under ISO 50001, an organization must determine, document and review EnPIs and compare them with energy baselines to show energy performance.
Example
For its ISO 50001 audit, the plant documents how each EnPI is calculated, which variables normalize it and how it compares with the 2025 baseline.
How it applies
- Management: EnPIs are part of the planning phase of ISO 50001 and are reviewed in management review. When relevant variables significantly affect energy performance, normalization is needed.
- Audit: Certification auditors check that EnPIs are appropriate, the method is documented and improvement in energy performance is demonstrated against the baseline.
- Engineering: Metering and data management must deliver the values required by the EnPI definitions at the needed accuracy.
- Documentation: The EnPI method, including formulas, data sources, boundaries and update criteria, is documented information under the standard. ISO 50006 provides guidance on setting up EnPIs and baselines.
ISO 50001 EnPI vs. generic energy KPI
A generic Energy performance indicator (EnPI) can be any energy measure a company tracks. Under ISO 50001, EnPIs are tied to baselines, normalization rules and documented methods. Tracking an energy KPI alone does not mean ISO 50001 requirements are met.
