Integration baseline
Also known as: integration configuration baseline
German: Integrationsbasis
In systems engineering, an integration baseline is a defined, approved set of system element versions, configurations and interface definitions that are integrated and tested together and serve as the reference for further integration or changes.
- System integration
In one sentence
An integration baseline is an approved set of element versions, configurations and interfaces that are integrated and tested together.
Example
Integration baseline 2.3 of the packaging line comprises PLC software 4.1.2, robot program 7.0, MES interface specification rev. D and gateway firmware 2.8.
How it applies
- Engineering: Integration and test results are only meaningful for a known combination of versions. The integration baseline fixes that combination; changes to any element create a new candidate baseline that needs regression testing.
- Commissioning: Record the baseline that was accepted at site acceptance. Later field changes are compared against it.
- Documentation: Documentation releases should reference the integration baseline they describe, so that readers know which software and interface versions a manual applies to. Keep the baseline under Change control.
Integration baseline vs. configuration baseline
A Configuration baseline is any approved reference configuration of an item. An integration baseline is a configuration baseline specifically for a set of elements that were integrated and tested together.
