Module Type Package (MTP)
Also known as: MTP
German: Module Type Package (MTP)
In process automation, the Module Type Package (MTP) is a vendor-neutral description of the automation interface of a process equipment assembly (module), covering its HMI, services, parameters and communication, specified in the VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658 series. A process orchestration layer imports MTPs to integrate modules.

In one sentence
The Module Type Package (MTP) is a vendor-neutral description of a process module's interface, specified in VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658.
Example
A skid manufacturer delivers a dosing module with its MTP file; the plant's orchestration layer imports it and can start the module's dosing service without custom programming.
How it applies
- Engineering: Each module has its own controller and exposes services (such as Fill, Heat, Dose) and their states via OPC UA, described in the MTP (based on AutomationML). This supports plug-and-produce in modular plants.
- Commissioning: Integration is faster, but module interfaces, services and parameters still need testing in the plant context.
- Documentation: Module documentation should match the MTP: the same service names, parameters and units. Operating instructions must cover the module both standalone and under orchestration. Work on international standardization of MTP is ongoing at IEC.
MTP vs. ISA-88
ISA-88 describes batch control models, such as phases and procedures. MTP describes how a module's automation is exposed and integrated. Module services can map onto ISA-88 phases, but the two standards address different questions.
