PITmode (Pilz)
Also known as: Pit mode, PITmode fusion, PITmode flex
German: PITmode
PITmode is a product family by Pilz for safe operating mode selection combined with access permission: users authenticate with an RFID transponder key and select the machine's operating mode, such as automatic, setup or service mode, according to their authorization.

In one sentence
PITmode is Pilz's operating mode selection and access permission system, using RFID transponder keys to select modes by user authorization.
Example
On a machining center, only maintenance staff with a service-level transponder key can switch PITmode to setup mode with enabling device.
How it applies
- Engineering: An operating mode selector replaces a key switch. Its output enters the safety logic, which enables the functions permitted in each Operating mode (for example reduced speed with Enabling device in setup mode). The selector alone does not make a mode safe; the safety functions behind each mode must be designed and validated.
- Operation: Access rights are bound to keys, which supports the Authorization concept and makes bypassing harder (Tamper resistance).
- Documentation: The operating manual has to describe each mode, who may select it, what protective measures apply in it and how keys are issued and withdrawn. Keep the key and rights management procedure in the operator documentation.
Keep in mind: Product names, variants and features change. Check the product line, achievable safety level and supported modes against Pilz's current documentation.
