Primary packaging
Also known as: Primary package, Sales packaging
German: Primärverpackung
In packaging, primary packaging is the packaging in direct contact with the product, such as a bottle, blister, pouch or can, which protects and contains the product and often carries the consumer information.
- Intralogistics
In one sentence
Primary packaging is the packaging in direct contact with the product, such as a bottle, blister or pouch.
Example
For tablets, the blister is the primary packaging; the folding carton around it is secondary packaging.
How it applies
- Engineering: Primary packaging materials must be compatible with the product (food contact, pharmaceutical container closure systems). Machines handling open product need hygienic design.
- Quality: In pharma, primary packaging operations happen under GMP in controlled environments, and packaging materials are part of the product's specification. Changes can require regulatory notification.
- Documentation: Specify materials, suppliers and approved changes. For labeling, keep the text on the primary pack consistent with other product information; in medical devices, see Labeling and instructions for use (MDR and IVDR).
Primary vs. secondary packaging
Primary packaging touches the product. Secondary packaging groups or surrounds primary packages, and Tertiary packaging prepares them for transport. The exact boundary differs between industries and regulations, so define it in your context. In pharma, secondary packaging such as the carton can carry mandatory information and safety features even though it doesn't touch the product.
