SysML block

Also known as: Block (SysML)

German: SysML-Block

In SysML, a block is the basic modular unit of structure; it can represent a system, subsystem, component, software item, person or physical item and carries properties, ports, operations and behavior.

  • Systems engineering

In one sentence

A SysML block is the basic modular unit of structure, representing a system, part, software item or physical item with properties and ports.

Example

The block 'Servo drive' has value properties for rated power and supply voltage, ports for power and fieldbus, and a state machine for its drive states.

How it applies

  • Engineering: Blocks are defined in Block definition diagram (BDD)s and used as parts in Internal block diagram (IBD)s; requirements are allocated to them.
  • Data: Block properties with units and value types can feed technical data sheets directly.
  • Documentation: A consistent block naming scheme helps the documentation team align component names in manuals, spare parts lists and the model.
  • Reuse: Well-defined blocks can be kept in a model library and reused across machines, together with their verified properties and interface definitions.

SysML block vs. system element

A System element is the systems engineering concept of a part of a system; a SysML block is how that concept is typed in a SysML model.
