Also known as: Software update, Firmware update
German: Update
In automation and IT, an update is the replacement of installed software, firmware or configuration by a newer version, to fix defects, close security vulnerabilities, add functions or maintain compatibility.
- Automation components
- OT security
In one sentence
An update replaces installed software, firmware or configuration with a newer version to fix defects, close vulnerabilities or add functions.
Example
The drive manufacturer publishes a firmware update that closes a vulnerability in the web interface; the plant installs it during the next planned shutdown.
How it applies
- Engineering: Plan updates as changes: check release notes, compatibility, required downtime and the impact on validated or safety-related functions. Safety-related firmware changes may require re-verification.
- Operation: OT updates are usually installed in planned windows after testing, as part of Patch management. Keep a Rollback capability in case the update fails.
- Security and compliance: The EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) obliges manufacturers of products with digital elements to provide security updates for the support period.
- Documentation: Manuals describe how to install updates safely, including interruption risks. Record every installed version; release notes should be written for operators, not only developers.
Update vs. upgrade
An update usually keeps the product's function and fixes or improves it. An upgrade moves to a new major version or feature level and may bring Breaking change effects, which need more testing.
