Warehouse control system (WCS)
Also known as: WCS, Material flow computer
German: Lagersteuerungssystem (WCS)
In intralogistics, a warehouse control system (WCS) is the software layer that controls and coordinates automated material handling equipment such as conveyors, sorters, AS/RS and mobile robots, based on orders from a warehouse management system.
- Intralogistics
In one sentence
A warehouse control system (WCS) coordinates automated handling equipment such as conveyors, sorters and AS/RS based on WMS orders.
Example
The WCS receives a retrieval order from the WMS, schedules the stacker crane and routes the pallet via conveyors to the picking station.
How it applies
- Engineering: The WCS translates logistics orders into equipment commands, tracks loads through the system and reports status back. It sits between the Warehouse management system (WMS) and the PLC-based controls.
- Commissioning: Integration tests between WMS, WCS and PLCs cover normal flows, faults, timeouts and restart. Interface specifications define messages and responsibilities.
- Operation: Operators use the WCS visualization to see load locations and faults, and to perform manual bookings when loads are handled by hand.
- Documentation: Define which system is the Source of truth for stock and load positions, and document the recovery procedures when the physical and system inventory differ.
WCS vs. WMS vs. WES
The WMS manages inventory and orders. The WCS controls equipment in real time. A Warehouse execution system (WES) combines parts of both, orchestrating work across people and automation. Product boundaries vary by vendor.
