DPP change control

Also known as: passport change control, DPP update process, DPP lifecycle management

DPP change control is the governed process that keeps a digital product passport current when the product, its supply chain or the rules change. It defines which changes trigger a passport update, who approves it, how fast it must be published, how earlier versions are archived and how outdated entries are prevented.

  • DPP
  • Data governance
  • Technical documentation

In one sentence

DPP change control defines which changes trigger passport updates, who approves them, how fast they go live and how old versions are archived.

Example

A supplier switch changes the recycled content of a housing; the change request in PLM triggers a passport update, the material engineer approves the new value, and the previous version is archived with its date.

How it applies

  • Triggers: Design changes, new suppliers or materials, updated test results, repair or remanufacturing, new legal requirements, corrected errors. List them per product group.
  • Approval and speed: Each trigger has an approver and a target time to publish. Passport data that lags behind the product misleads its audiences.
  • Archiving: Keep earlier versions with their dates; EN 18221:2026 on data storage, archiving and persistence is among the harmonized DPP standards.
  • Preventing outdated entries: Hook the passport into existing change control and management of change instead of running a parallel process.
  • Technical documentation: A change that updates the passport often also updates manuals, spare-parts lists or safety information. Assess them together.

Compared with the USA, Canada and China

Traceability rules elsewhere mostly require records at the time of shipment or reporting. The EU passport must stay current over the product's life, which makes change control a lasting duty rather than a one-time filing.
