In one sentence

An industrial robot is an automatically controlled, reprogrammable multipurpose manipulator programmable in three or more axes for industrial use.

Example

The welding line uses twelve industrial robots, each with its own robot controller, coordinated by a line PLC.

How it applies

  • Engineering: Industrial robots are classified by kinematic structure, payload, reach and accuracy. ISO 10218-1 sets safety requirements for the robot; ISO 10218-2 covers its integration into applications and cells.
  • Compliance: A robot on its own is typically supplied as partly completed machinery; the integrator completes the machine, performs the Risk assessment and is responsible for the conformity of the complete Robot cell.
  • Documentation: The robot manufacturer's manuals (and, for partly completed machinery, the assembly instructions) are inputs, not the final user documentation. The documentation team of the integrator should build the cell manual on them, covering the application, safeguarding and operating modes.

Industrial robot vs. robot

Robot is the wider term and includes service and mobile robots. An industrial robot is specifically a reprogrammable manipulator for industrial automation, with three or more programmable axes.
