ISA-95

Also known as: S95, IEC 62264

German: ISA-95

ISA-95 (ANSI/ISA-95, internationally IEC 62264) is the standard series for enterprise-control system integration; it defines models and terminology for the functions and information exchanged between business planning and logistics (level 4) and manufacturing operations management (level 3).

  • Standards

In one sentence

ISA-95 (IEC 62264) defines models and terms for integrating business systems (ERP) with manufacturing operations (MES).

Example

The ERP sends production orders to the MES using ISA-95 object models, and the MES reports material consumption and produced quantities back.

How it applies

  • Engineering: The functional hierarchy (levels 0 to 4) and object models (material, equipment, personnel, production schedule) structure MES projects and interfaces; B2MML is a common XML implementation.
  • Security: The level model is often used alongside Zones and conduits, but ISA-95 itself is not a security standard; security architecture follows IEC 62443.
  • Documentation: Interface documentation between ERP, MES and control should use ISA-95 terms; the documentation team can align information models and glossaries with them.
  • Data exchange: Agree on the ISA-95 object versions and the exact message set with the MES supplier; the standard leaves room for different implementations.

ISA-95 vs. ISA-88

ISA-88 models batch control inside the plant; ISA-95 models the exchange between plant operations and the business level.
