How it applies
- Technical documentation: Short sentences, consistent terms, active voice and one instruction per step improve comprehension. Controlled language and a terminology database help across translations.
- Physical conditions: For labels and safety signs, size, contrast, durability and viewing distance matter as much as wording. Check readability after years of wear, not only at delivery.
- Audience: Consider the actual readers: language skills, literacy, familiarity with symbols and the stress of the situation. Emergency information must be understandable at a glance.
- Evidence: Readability can be tested with representative users. Record the method and results, especially for warning messages on high risks.
Readability vs. usability
Readability is about whether text and symbols can be perceived and understood. Safety information usability is broader: whether users can find the information when they need it and apply it correctly. A perfectly readable warning in the wrong place fails on usability.
