Source code repository
Also known as: Code repository, Repo
German: Quellcode-Repository
In software engineering, a source code repository is a storage location managed by a version control system that holds source files and their complete change history.
- Software engineering
In one sentence
A source code repository stores source files and their complete change history, managed by a version control system.
Example
Each machine type has its own repository containing the PLC code, the HMI project exports, the test scripts and the documentation sources.
How it applies
- Engineering: Repositories hold everything needed to rebuild a release: code, configuration, build scripts and tests. Access rights and backup matter because the repository is the source of truth.
- Change control: The history shows who changed what and when, which supports audits and traceability.
- Documentation: Docs-as-code teams keep documentation in the same repository or a linked one, so a change and its documentation update can be reviewed together. Access for technical writers should be planned from the start.
Source code repository vs. artifact repository
A source code repository stores sources and history. An Artifact repository stores built outputs, such as packages and images, produced from those sources.
