Production performance

Also known as: Production response

German: Produktionsleistung

In ISA-95 / IEC 62264, production performance is the information reporting the results of production in response to a production schedule, such as produced quantities, materials consumed, resources used, times and status. It is the production-specific form of operations performance.

  • MES
  • Standards

In one sentence

In ISA-95, production performance reports production results: quantities, materials consumed, resources used, times and status.

Example

For each order, the MES reports the good quantity, scrap, lots of material consumed and actual run time to the ERP.

How it applies

  • Operation: Production performance is the basis for order confirmation, inventory updates and costing at Level 4.
  • Improvement: The same data feeds KPIs and root-cause analyses of losses.
  • Engineering: Automatic data collection from control systems reduces manual entry errors.
  • Documentation: Operator documentation should explain how quantities are counted or confirmed, how scrap is booked and how errors are corrected. In regulated industries, such records may be subject to data integrity requirements. Consistent units and counting points across machines, MES and ERP are a common source of discrepancies and should be defined in the interface specification.

Production performance vs. production capability

Production capability describes what could be produced. Production performance reports what was produced. Both are among the four information categories exchanged between Levels 3 and 4 in ISA-95.
