Servicing

Also known as: Routine maintenance, Service

German: Wartung

In maintenance according to DIN 31051, servicing is the set of measures that delay the reduction of an item's wear reserve, such as cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, replenishing and replacing consumables. It is one of the basic measures of maintenance, alongside inspection, repair and improvement.

  • Maintenance

In one sentence

Servicing covers measures that delay wear, such as cleaning, lubricating, adjusting and replacing consumables, one of the basic maintenance measures.

Example

Weekly servicing of the palletizer includes cleaning the light curtain lenses, greasing the guide rails and checking the belt tension.

How it applies

  • Operation: Many servicing tasks are done by trained operators, while others require maintenance staff; the manual should say who may do what.
  • Maintenance: Servicing is planned at fixed intervals or based on condition and is part of Preventive maintenance.
  • Safety: Even simple servicing, such as cleaning, can require access to hazard zones. The documentation must state the required machine state and protective measures.
  • Documentation: Servicing tasks need lubricants and consumables with exact specifications (see Lubrication specification), intervals, quantities and steps. Tables of servicing tasks and the step-by-step procedures should be maintained from one source.

Servicing (Wartung) vs. maintenance (Instandhaltung)

In German, "Wartung" is only one part of "Instandhaltung". In English, "maintenance" is often used where "servicing" is meant. When translating, check whether the source means the umbrella term Maintenance or the preventive care measures only.
